Apple has just released iOS 4.3.1, bringing several minor fixes and improvements to Apple’s operating system for mobile devices. The build number is 8G4.
This update contains improvements and other bug fixes including:
- Fixes an occasional graphics glitch on iPod touch (4th generation)
- Resolves bugs related to activating and connecting to some cellular networks
- Fixes image flicker when using Apple Digital AV Adapter with some TVs
- Resolves an issue authenticating with some enterprise web services
iOS 4.3.1 is available for the GSM iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 2, iPad, and the third- and fourth-generation iPod touch. No update is available for the CDMA iPhone running on Verizon.
Earlier this week, a report surfaced claiming that iOS 4.3.1 would be released with 1-2 weeks, and a follow-up report had suggested that the release might address some battery life issues reported with iOS 4.3, although that has yet to be confirmed.

But as noted by Engadget, a number of clues are lining up to suggest that the company will announce video calling support for the iPhone and iPod touch at CES 2011 early next month.
Skype has been telling everyone that it’ll be making a “series of video-related announcements” at CES next month… and it’s participating in a panel called “Video Calling Gets Ready for Primetime,” so yeah, needless to say, we’d have to guess that Skype’s finally getting ready to enter the mobile video calling game in a big way. Anyhow, the final piece in the puzzle filtered into our inbox this morning: a help document on Skype’s site detailing making video calls using Skype for iPhone.
The help document, available through the online help portion of the Skype iPhone application, curiously notes that users of a number of iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad models can use video calling despite the fact that not all of these devices are camera-enabled.
To make video calls with your contacts, you will need an iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, 3rd generation iPod touch, 4th generation iPod touch or an iPad. Your contacts will only be able to see you if your device has a camera. Make sure your device is running iOS 4.0 or above and that you are using Skype for iPhone 3.0 or above.
While the help document notes that Skype for iPhone 3.0 is required for video calling, the current version of Skype for iPhone is only 2.1.2.

- MobileMe: Apple’s Me.com web-based MobileMe services are currently down as the company makes changes presumably associated with its “Find My iPhone” service transitioning from a part of the paid MobileMe service to a free service on compatible devices.
A revamped login page has occasionally been visible, giving a fresh look to the service with a prominent MobileMe cloud logo and animated wisps of the cloud offering some additional visual interest. The login page invites users to sign in with their Apple IDs, but they will not be able to so until they have set up Find My iPhone on their iOS 4.2 devices using their Apple IDs.

If the user proceeds to enter a Me.com email address as the login, the page automatically recognizes the entry as the user types and dynamically changes to display icons for the full suite of MobileMe services.

- iWork for iPad: Macworld reports that Apple will unsurprisingly be rolling out updates to its three iWork applications for the iPad today: Pages, Keynote, and Numbers. The updates will bring support for iOS 4.2 features such as multitasking and AirPrint, as well as several other changes including improved PDF export and presenter-display support for Keynote when connecting an iPad to an external display. Numbers will see the addition of print previews including Auto Fit functionality, as well as support for formula entry with a keyboard. Pages will gain automatic pagination of tables and fixes for several importing bugs.
- Find My iPhone: Apple’s Find My iPhone application has also just been updated to add support for iOS 4.2 and the free service.
What’s New in Version 1.1
- iPhone 4, iPad, or 4th generation iPod touch owners can use Find My iPhone for free with their Apple ID (iOS 4.2 required)
- Support for 30 additional languages
- Important: this update is required for users of the previous version of Find My iPhone app (v1.0 and v1.0.1)

An iPhone parts supplier sent us these photos of what are claimed to be the front LCD and bezel of the upcoming 4th generation iPod Touch. The new part clearly shows a front-sided hole that would leave room for a front-facing FaceTime camera.
While we’ve seen similar parts before, this part is clearly marked as an Apple part “Apple (c) 2010″. This stamp is visible in the full resolution image. The part is also stamped with April 29, 2010, indicating that the build date is relatively recent. We’ve seen other iPod Touch parts circulating in the past. In particular, a back-side camera model reached a late prototype stage last year but was never released.
Apple is widely expected to release new iPod Touch devices this fall. Rumors had already pegged the new Touch to likely carry a front-facing camera. Apple will be using email addresses instead of phone numbers to initiate FaceTime calls.
