I have my developer associates use HostGator.com to start. once they have built up a business, some have moved on as they did research in the marketplace. But the combo of value, service and support is a good mix there.
Note: they all merely provide a hosting solution for their clients. They don't try to offer services to the broad public, as there is always some meatball co. somewhere that will undercut your price. I tell them to build it in the development package with maint. and offer it as a value add. That way the customer knows you keep full control of the site, and are more accessible to them, can make changes faster, and they only have one point of contact and thus don't get their site lost in the shuffle. Also, you aren't trying to collateralize your hosting by up-selling them on every little thing – like GoDaddy!
I and !.com is another good one – until you learn that they has a little clause in their contract that says they can resign up your web address and highjack you to buy it back from them – even after you leave their company. you have to specifically TELL them SPECIFICALLY that you do not want them to do this “on your behalf” which is something that you probably didn't know about in the first place! But their attitude is you should have READ ALL the information that you clicked “I read and accept.”
Do yourself a favor and get a Pre-Paid Legal account in your state and really DO let your attorney's review any agreement (they'll do two free per month) that you intend to enter into. Protect your interest!
I had 60+ web address at 1 and 1. Transferred to HostGator, and got a big surprise at the end of the year. had to do a lot a yelling on the phone to MAKE them not honor something I had agreed to but didn't know was there. at the consumer level it's only a $35 – $75 hit. at the dev'l level it can become a nightmare…

Today is the 112th anniversary of Ernest Hemingway’s birth. July 2nd was the 50th anniversary of his death. he was a manly man and a brave man and an honorable man who wrote declarative sentences with lots of conjunctions about manly men and brave men and honorable men. he traveled the world searching for inspiring intrepidness and found such in Cuba and in Spain and in Italy and in France and in other men’s trousers and in the hills of Africa.
Hemingway’s adventurous lifestyle led him to the front lines of battlefields in Italy during the first World War and Spain during the Spanish Civil War and France during the second World War. Covering the first World War he was injured in his robust right leg by a rogue piece of shrapnel and faced his injuries steely eyed and stone faced and honorably and quietly and was laid up in a European hospital for six months where his resolve was unwavering and undefeated.
Hemingway’s adventurous lifestyle led him to the front lines of battlefields…
He met many women and loved many women and even married four of them. One of the women he loved was a nurse he met in the hospital during his convalescence and she was beautiful and loved him too but soon left his bedside and ran into the open arms of an Italian soldier. Only 19 years-old at the time young Ernest was completely devastated and sexually confused and vowed to write only of men and mannish women and fish and bulls and fishermen and matadors and abortions.
Moving back to the States in 1919 Ernest continued to write about wars and fish and homoeroticism and the unwavering fortitude of muscular male protagonists during wartime and fishing. with boredom and a longing for ‘taking a steam’ with exotic dudes in foreign locales Hemingway and his first wife Hadley Richardson packed up and sailed to Paris to live amongst a group of other enlightened expatriates and writers and musicians and painters and Gertrude Stein. Ms. Stein immediately recognized his machismo and cognizant of the paucity of machismo in America prose at that time she decided that early 20′s Hemingway should be her protege and dauphin and fellow chauvinist. They got on like gang busters and drank coffee in cafes and imbibed wine in bars and talked about books and music and sports and Ernest’s closeted homosexuality and Americans in Paris.
They got on like gang busters and drank coffee in cafes…
At around this time Hemingway’s friend and contemporary F. Scott Fitzgerald published his novel The great Gatsby and though it wasn’t a great big hit he realized that his friend could write circles around him and was not very macho at all and was being totally emasculated by his domineering and crazy wife who also wasn’t manly…or a man for that matter which was strictly verboten in Hemingway lore and with that he had made his decision courageously and dutifully. Unacceptable company was this Zelda said Ernest and justified the time spent with Gertrude with a confident and manly point to her crooked cock (Author’s note: Gertrude Stein was by all accounts an anti-feminist and near-misogynistic lesbian. Go figure) and vowed to impugn the character of F. Scott at every turn from that moment forward. Poor F. Scott went on to drunken isolation as Ernest achieved international fame for his prosaicness and formidable chest pelt and taciturnity and fishing expeditions.
Once again moving back to the U.S in the late twenties Ernest continued to write about his fascination with sweaty fisherman and sweaty matadors and fish and bulls and beauty mixed with brutality. Splitting time between the shores of the Floridian Key West and the shores of Cuban tiki bars meant Hemingway’s larger than life legacy would only continue to grow along with the sales of his books and short stories. at this point he was on his second marriage having left his first wife behind at a train station and she was crushed and confused but he was undefeated. he had packed an extra suitcase in preparation for the deed and sneaked onto the train leaving his ringer suitcase behind next to Hadley on the platform. The ringer suitcase looked on ruefully as the train carrying his owner departed but also felt. . .and ultimately remained. . .undefeated.
With his newly crowned third wife in tow Hemingway went on hunting expeditions in Africa and attended bull fights in Spain in the mid-to-late 1930′s where he would eventually cover the Spanish Civil War. Not satisfied with the level of bravery on display Ernest took a ferry to the continent and walked on bare feet to the shores of Normandy and covered the famous battle and met many brave men worth his admiration for their dignity and resolution and heroism and impeccable pectoral muscles.
The 1950′s were a time of reflection and inventory.
The 1950′s were a time of reflection and inventory. The first half of the decade was dedicated to the drafting of his memoir Immovable Feast and drinking and trimming his beard and descending into madness. For unknown reasons Hemingway decided to permanently leave his former American residence of Key West and move to Idaho in the latter half of the decade and work on finishing his memoirs and fishing and growing his beard back out and nursing his numerous ailments. Never again would Hemingway see the Cuban beaches nor the cafes of Paris nor the rings of Spain.
This decision and consequent realization of Idaho and all its offerings not being up to snuff with the mojitos and nude beaches of Key West worked hard and fast in eroding the spirit of the great adventurer. Surrounded by prairie land and boredom and old age and countless afflictions the great man took the barrel of a shotgun in his mouth and pulled the trigger and he was left motionless and unknowing. with the shotgun barrel smoking by his lifeless side his fingers and limbs and brain matter and khaki pants and boat shoes and newly sanguine beard stood strong in their master’s disappearing act and they were beaten but not defeated. . .

Last month, we noted that major U.S. banks Bank of America and Citigroup have been running pilot tests with an eye toward allowing their employees to abandon their corporate-standard BlackBerry devices in favor of the iPhone, demonstrating Apple’s growing place in the business world and a increasing threat to Research in Motion’s position in that market.
Bloomberg now reports that Research in Motion is facing challenges on the tablet front before it can even get its PlayBook out the door, with investment bank JPMorgan Chase opting to provide its employees with iPads to assist them with their work as part of a pilot study to gauge their effectiveness.
JPMorgan Chase & Co. will give its investment bankers iPads to provide an additional mobile tool as Apple Inc. expands its domain to Wall Street, threatening Research in Motion Ltd. in a market it traditionally dominated.
“We believe there are real benefits in our working environment that can be realized using this device – as well as the personal productivity and enjoyment that come as part of the package,” two managing directors at New York-based JPMorgan said in an e-mail obtained by Bloomberg News.
According to the email, all associates in JPMorgan’s global investment banking division will be eligible to receive free iPads, with the pilot program extending through May 1st, 2011.
Bankers will be able to access e-mails, contacts, calendar and attachments via Microsoft Outlook, as well as have the ability to mark-up and annotate confidential documents and make client presentations, according to the e-mail. They will also be allowed to download applications for personal use.
“There are a variety of ways to leverage the iPad. Some work off-the-shelf whilst others rely on JPMorgan software/security tools,” the managing directors said. “Depending on its success we will evaluate if we should repeat this one time initiative and/or expand it to others.”
Apple has been increasing its focus on enterprise deployment for the iPhone and iPad as the company has worked to build corporate-friendly features into iOS. The company has targeted Research in Motion’s leadership position in the market, even going as far as to hire away a number of Research in Motion’s key sales employees to head up its own efforts.
Update: Swiss bank UBS is also reportedly piloting the iPhone and iPad for its employees.

BofA, Citi test iPhone as BlackBerry alternative
Steve Jobs may soon bag a pair of the biggest U.S. banks as iPhone supporters. Bank of America and Citigroup are considering whether to let employees use Apple’s iPhone as an alternative to Research In Motion’s…

Apple has long touted the role the iPhone can play in the business world, frequently pointing to the percentages of top companies using or piloting the device in their businesses. Bloomberg reports today that two of the biggest U.S. banks, Bank of America and Citigroup, are engaged in pilot testing that could open the door for their employees to adopt the iPhone for corporate usage as an alternative to their existing BlackBerry-dominated systems.
Bank of America Corp. and Citigroup Inc. are considering whether to let employees use the Apple Inc. phone as an alternative to Research In Motion Ltd.’s BlackBerry for corporate e-mail, said three people familiar with the plans. The banks are testing software for the iPhone that’s designed to make it secure enough for company messages, said the people, who didn’t want to be named because the plans aren’t public.
The news marks yet more evidence of Research in Motion’s weakening position in the corporate world, following strong growth by Apple in the most recent quarter which saw the iPhone surpass the BlackBerry line in sales.
Bank of America, which has about 284,000 employees, and Citigroup, with 258,000 workers, are also testing Android smartphones, one person said. The efforts are intended to widen the choice of devices employees can use, rather than replace the BlackBerry, the person said.
The trials at Bank of America and Citigroup involve more than 1,000 employees, two people said. Testing, which typically takes four to six weeks, is advanced at Bank of America and will be followed by a pilot project before potentially wider implementation, one person said.
The report points to a survey showing 83% of U.S. companies now permitting employees to use devices other than BlackBerry phones, with many companies finding that they can cut costs by allowing additional options as employees become increasingly willing to pay for iPhones out of their own pockets.

As hinted early in the keynote with the mention of TV show rentals, Steve Jobs today announced the second generation of Apple TV hardware, a significant redesign for the device. At one-fourth the size of the original Apple TV, the new device features HDMI and digital audio outputs, as well as Ethernet and 802.11n Wi-Fi and will offer only rentals from the iTunes Store.
Unlike the previous Apple TV, the new model will not have any significant internal storage, relying on streaming content only. Additionally, media can no longer be purchased but only rented. First-run HD movies can be rented for $4.99 on the day the DVD is released. Renting HD TV shows will cost $.99. At launch, only ABC and Fox will offer their HD shows for rental at this price.
Apple today announced the new Apple TV which offers the simplest way to watch your favorite HD movies and TV shows on your HD TV for the breakthrough price of just $99. Apple TV users can choose from the largest online selection of HD movies to rent, including first run movies for just $4.99, and the largest online selection of HD TV show episodes to rent from ABC, ABC Family, Fox, Disney Channel and BBC America for just 99 cents.
Apple TV also streams content from Netflix, YouTube, Flickr and MobileMe, as well as music, photos and videos from PCs and Macs to your HD TV. Enjoy gorgeous slideshows of your photos on your HD TV using Apple TV’s selection of built-in slideshows. Apple TV has built-in HDMI, Wi-Fi, Ethernet and an internal power supply for easy set-up, and features silent, cool, very low power operation in an enclosure that’s less than four inches square – 80 percent smaller than the previous generation.
The new Apple TV’s support for Netflix’s streaming service allows subscribers on a DVD rental plan costing $8.99 or more per month to access streaming content for no additional charge. Apple TV users will also be able to stream content from YouTube, Flickr, and MobileMe.
Apple’s new AirPlay, which replaces AirTunes, will allow the streaming of content from an iOS device to an Apple TV. During the keynote, Jobs demonstrated streaming a movie from an iPad to an Apple TV over a Wi-Fi network.
Apple TV content will be available in six countries to start, with more coming later this year. The new Apple TV, priced at $99, comes with a remote control and will be available starting in about four weeks, with pre-orders starting today.
