With the nascent worldwide tablet market still in a state of flux as Apple’s game-changing iPad is starting to see competition from Android devices now making their way to the market, observers have been working to develop a picture of how things are shaking out in the fast-moving market. Research firm Strategy Analytics today announced the result of its survey of market data for the fourth quarter of 2010, unsurprisingly showing Android rapidly gaining a foothold in a market still dominated by the iPad.

According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, global tablet shipments reached 10 million units in the fourth quarter of 2010. Apple maintained first position, while Android soared and captured a record 22 percent global share.

Peter King, Director at Strategy Analytics, said, “Global tablet shipments grew 120 percent sequentially to reach 9.7 million units in Q4 2010. Apple maintained first position. Apple recorded an impressive 75 percent global marketshare during the fourth quarter, but it has slipped from a peak of 95 percent in Q3 2010 due to rising competition from Android.”

While few had expected Apple to maintain its virtual monopoly on the market and its 75% share still registers as a dominating position akin to that seen with the iPod in the MP3 player market, Android’s impressive quarter-to-quarter growth even before the release of the tablet-optimized “Honeycomb” version demonstrates the wide acceptance of Google’s mobile platform by device manufacturers and consumers.

With an array of competitors, including Honeycomb-based devices such as the Motorola Xoom and Research in Motion’s BlackBerry PlayBook, coming to market over the next few months and Apple preparing to roll out its next-generation iPad, competition in the rapidly-growing tablet market should continue to intensify.

DigiTimes reports that Taiwanese manufacturer Pegatron has recently bumped its production plans for the CDMA iPhone to 12-15 million units for 2011, up from earlier plans for 10 million units.

Taiwan-based notebook maker Pegatron Technology has recently started shipping its Apple CDMA iPhones orders with total volume is estimated to be around 12-15 million units in 2011, helping to cover the company’s notebook manufacturing business, which has recently suffered loss of orders, according to sources from upstream component makers.

As we noted last week, the CDMA iPhone is expected to quickly make its way to a number of countries around the world, despite Verizon in the United States being the only CDMA carrier so far to announce availability. Reports on CDMA iPhone production have indicated that Pegatron is shipping units for international markets, while Foxconn is handling CDMA iPhone production for the United States.

A pair of reports last October had indicated that Foxconn and Pegatron would be splitting the CDMA iPhone 4 manufacturing load roughly equally, with Foxconn at the time planning for 15 million units in 2011 while Pegatron targeted 10 million units of its own. With Pegatron having raised its target in recent weeks, total CDMA iPhone production for 2011 is now pegged at up to 30 million units.

Apple is widely expected to introduce a fifth-generation iPhone around the middle of this year, with most observers assuming that it will be available in both GSM and CDMA versions. Consequently, manufacturers’ plans are likely accounting for production of both iPhone 4 and the unreleased “iPhone 5″.

Apple Has Reportedly Boosted iPhone Production

According to sources, Apple has boosted its iPhone global shipment target for the first quarter of 2011 to between 20 million and 21 million units — up from 19 million previously. Industry sources also told the Taiwan-based DigiTimes on Monday that Apple intends to ship five to six million WCDMA iPhones to carriers in North America and the Asia-Pacific region during the first three months of …

Apple Has Reportedly Boosted iPhone Production

DigiTimes reports that Apple has raised their 1st Quarter 2011 iPhone shipment goals from 19 million units to 20-21 million units. This number reportedly includes 5-6 million CDMA iPhones:

The first-quarter shipment goal for WCDMA iPhones has been adjusted from 13 million units to 14-15 million units, the sources said. The shipment goal for CDMA iPhones, which will be launched in North America and Asia Pacific in the first quarter, is set at 5-6 million units, the sources added.

WCDMA refers to the UMTS standard that the current iPhone 4 uses, but the CDMA iPhones will be a separate model that will bring compatibility to Verzion in the U.S. and apparently to other carriers in Asia Pacific.

Verizon has long been rumored to be the next major U.S. carrier to see iPhone compatibility. The Verizon iPhone is believed to be coming to Verizon in the first quarter of 2011. Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg will be giving a keynote address at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show on January 6th, 2011 at 8:30am.

Despite Apple reporting lower-than-expected iPad sales in its quarterly earnings release yesterday, research firm iSuppli has once again raised its projections for iPad sales through the end of 2012 to over 120 million, up over 20 million from its July projections.

iSuppli has increased its iPad sales estimates from 12.9 million to 13.8 million for 2010, from 36.5 million to 43.7 million for 2011, and from 50.4 million to 63.3 million for 2012.

“In its previous iPad forecasts, iSuppli noted that the only constraint on shipment growth now is production – and not demand,” said Rhoda Alexander, director of monitor research for iSuppli. “The only factor limiting production is the availability of key iPad components, such as the Field Fringe Switching (FFS) LCD panels, projected capacitive touch screens and NAND flash. Despite ongoing yield issues, Apple’s suppliers have steadily increased monthly production to meet Apple’s demand. Production rates are now on target to meet the expected strong fourth-quarter sales.”

Along with the easing of supply constraints, the report points to faster-than-expected expansion of retail distribution and opportunities in education as positive factors for the iPad’s sales future.

Apple yesterday announced sales of 4.19 million iPads in the June-September quarter, well ahead of the 3.27 million iPads sold in the previous quarter but below the nearly 5 million units that had been expected by Wall Street analysts.

Barron’s reports on a new research note from JMP Research analyst Alex Gauna, who has used evidence that regular shipments of the new Apple TV to Apple’s retail stores around the United States are selling out almost as soon as they arrive to estimate that the device is selling at a rate of at least one million units per quarter.

Gauna believes Apple TV is selling at a pace at least one quarter to one third that of the iPad, or at least 1 million units a quarter. He says the $99 price point “is resonating with consumers.”

Gauna’s report relies on checks with over 20 Apple retail stores around the country, with anecdotal evidence from other customers supporting that observation.

With the new Apple TV having been available for only a week and shipping estimates in Apple’s U.S. online store currently at 1-2 weeks, it is difficult to gauge true demand for the device beyond the initial surge and Apple’s efforts to ramp up production to meet that demand. One million units per quarter would, however, appear to be a relatively significant improvement over the original Apple TV based on analyst estimates of that model’s performance over the last several years. Apple does not provide data on Apple TV unit sales in its quarterly earnings release, so firm estimates of the device’s performance since its 2007 introduction are not available.
