SAN DIEGO, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Leading Web hosting provider Superb Internet announced today that it has implemented Outbound Spam Protection from Commtouch® (Nasdaq:CTCH – News), in order to identify and block spam emanating from its network.
“Commtouch Outbound Spam Protection ensures that our network and infrastructure are protected from the effects of outgoing spam,” said Haralds Jass, president and CEO of Superb Internet. ”We consistently strive to enhance our solution and offer our customers the best possible service and protection, and the Commtouch solution allows us to cut operating costs, while offering the best experience for our customers.”
Outbound spam can be a serious problem for hosting providers, leading to increased costs and customer dissatisfaction as a result of blacklisted IP addresses. Cybercriminal tactics have also evolved recently to use more compromised accounts for sending spam, which introduces additional challenges and costs for hosters.
Integrated within Superb’s account management portal, Outbound Spam Protection enables Superb to track suspicious email messages and identify the senders, whether they are zombies, malicious or hacked accounts. Superb can then pro-actively reach out to its customers that may have been compromised, or disconnect spammer accounts.
“We are pleased to be working with leading hosting providers such as Superb Internet,” said Francois Depayras, Commtouch vice president, Americas sales and business development. “Commtouch’s innovative, proven outbound protection solution, which is part of Commtouch’s complete email security suite for Web hosting providers, enables hosting companies to reduce operating expenses, increase operational simplicity and put their full focus on building the business.”
Commtouch will be presenting its Internet security solutions at HostingCon 2011, booth #232, at the San Diego Convention Center, August 9-10, 2011. at the booth, service providers can enter to receive a free Domain Analysis Report, to identify compromised accounts in their networks.

In mid-October, it was reported that warehouse club chain Costco would cease carrying iPods after it lost out in an expansion of iPad availability that saw its rival Sam’s Club and other retailers such as Target and Wal-Mart gain distribution rights for the popular tablet device. In subsequent weeks, observers noted Apple’s products beginning to disappear from Costco’s stores.
The Seattle Times reports that the parting of ways between Apple and Costco has been officially confirmed, with the two companies coming to a “mutual agreement” to end their long-standing relationship.
The chain is phasing out Apple products, per a mutual agreement between the companies, Galanti told The Seattle Times. Costco had sold iPods and pre-loaded iTunes cards for years, although never at huge discounts; and Apple never allowed Costco to sell its products online like other retailers, he said. “In the past couple months, we agreed to wind down.”
Apple spokeswoman Amy Bessette said the company has no comment.
Apple’s firm hold over pricing for its products and the deep discount pricing of warehouse clubs such as Costco have been somewhat at odds over the years, with the opposing sides reaching a middle ground of slight discounts on Apple products appearing at the club chains.

Economy for iPad
Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ responses to customer emails are well-known and given great attention as official “from the horse’s mouth” statements regarding Apple’s products and plans, despite the fact that many of his statements are brief and vague enough to give away little information. According to The Seattle Times, however, Jobs has gone a step further and telephoned a developer who wrote him an email after having his iPad application rejected from the App Store for using a private application programming interface (API).
Frustrated by Apple’s rejection of his iPad app, Seattle developer Ram Arumugam e-mailed Chief Executive Steve Jobs. Two hours later, he picked up a phone call and heard: “Ram, this is Steve.” Jobs was on the other end.
The two talked about Arumugam’s app, called “Economy for iPad,” and why it was rejected by Apple.
Arumugam, a former Microsoft employee now heading up a company developing iOS applications, and Jobs discussed the developer’s usage of a private API to deal with what Arumugam considered to be a bug in the behavior of the iPad’s on-screen keyboard. At the conclusion of the discussion, Arumugam agreed to remove the private API, and Economy for iPad was quickly accepted into the App Store.
Jobs’ phone call is not the first time an Apple executive has directly intervened in the App Store review process, as senior vice president Phil Schiller has been known to reply via email and telephone in rare cases related to App Store issues.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Interval Licensing, a patent licensing firm run by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen and designed to protect the intellectual property of Allen’s former technology incubator company Interval Research Corporation, has filed suit against Apple and ten other companies over several patents related to e-commerce and Web search technologies.
Mr. Allen, 57, Friday through his firm Interval Licensing LLC filed suit in federal court in Seattle asserting the companies are using technology from his laboratory. Named in the suit, along with Apple and Google, are AOL Inc., eBay Inc., Facebook Inc., Netflix Inc., Office Depot Inc., OfficeMax Inc., Staples Inc., Yahoo Inc. and Google’s YouTube subsidiary.
The suit doesn’t name Microsoft, Amazon.com Inc. or other technology firms in Seattle where Mr. Allen is based. The suit doesn’t estimate a damage amount.
According to a press release issued by Interval Licensing, four patents are at stake in the lawsuit:
- United States Patent No. 6,263,507 issued for an invention entitled “Browser for Use in Navigating a Body of Information, With Particular Application to Browsing Information Represented By Audiovisual Data.”
- United States Patent No. 6,034,652 issued for an invention entitled “Attention Manager for Occupying the Peripheral Attention of a Person in the Vicinity of a Display Device.”
- United States Patent No. 6,788,314 issued for an invention entitled “Attention Manager for Occupying the Peripheral Attention of a Person in the Vicinity of a Display Device.”
- United States Patent No. 6,757,682 issued for an invention entitled “Alerting Users to Items of Current Interest.”
The press release claims that the technologies are “fundamental” to the operation of leading e-commerce and search companies and the firm is merely looking to protect its own investments in innovation. According to The Wall Street Journal, the lawsuit marks a major shift for Allen in his increasingly aggressive efforts to protect the intellectual property developed at Interval Research during the 1990s.
