Reuters reports that Apple has “completed work” on its rumored cloud-based music service and will beat Google to the punch as the search and advertising giant continues to work on a similar project.

Apple Inc has completed work on an online music storage service and is set to launch it ahead of Google Inc, whose own music efforts have stalled, according to several people familiar with both companies’ plans.

Apple’s plans will allow iTunes customers to store their songs on a remote server, and then access them from wherever they have an Internet connection, said two of these people who asked not to be named as the talks are still confidential.

Interestingly, the sources indicate that Apple still has yet to sign any of the major labels to new agreements covering the forthcoming cloud-based capabilities, making it unclear how the sources can be so confident that Apple will beat Google to a launch. Apple has reportedly not yet informed music industry insiders of when it intends to launch the new cloud-based service.

iPad 3 Unlikely to Come This Year?

On April 12, 2011, in iPad, iPhone, by admin

Earlier this year, rumors had suggested that we might be getting two iPad revisions this year. The iPad 2 was launched in March but whispers had suggested that the iPad 3 might not be that far behind, possibly by September of 2011.

Digitimes. however, is now citing component partner sources that Apple has yet to provide any information about manufacturing the iPad 3. This leads them to conclude that the iPad 3 won’t be shipping until next year at the earliest:

The sources pointed out that they have not yet received any notice for next generation iPad products and do not believe iPad 2 is a transitional product. With iPad 2′s strong shipment order forecast from Apple, the sources believe iPad 3 will not appear in the short term.

The Loop reports that Apple is planning to cut significant numbers of software titles and peripherals from its retail store sales floors, moving to free up space to accommodate the more extensive Personal Setup service for Macs launched in January.

Among the products that will no longer be displayed in the retail stores are printers, scanners and possible some hard drives. These peripherals will still be stocked in the store and available if a customer requests them.

At the point of sale, the Apple salesperson will still recommend the customer purchase one of those peripherals if they feel it fits in with the customer’s purchase.

According to my sources, Apple is also getting rid of up to 32 game titles from its retail locations. That would reduce the number of games being displayed in the stores to around 8 per store.

We previously reported that Apple is looking to eventually discontinue all boxed software sales from its retail stores in favor of the Mac App Store, and the upcoming changes may be the first step down that road.
