South Korean carrier SK Telecom today announced that it will launch the iPhone on March 16th, becoming the second carrier in the world to offer the CDMA iPhone following Verizon’s launch last month.
“SK Telecom is proud to offer iPhone 4 on the nation’s top network,” said So Jin-Woo, President of Platform Business and Co-CEO of SK Telecom. “Our customers will benefit from flexible tariff plans tailored to their unique usage needs along with a high level of customer care.”
Pre-registration for the iPhone on SK Telecom begins tomorrow. SK Telecom will also become the second carrier in South Korea to offer the iPhone, breaking the exclusivity held by KT Telecom for the last several years.
The CDMA iPhone may also soon be headed to a number of other major carriers around the world, including some of the world’s largest carriers in China and India.

South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency reports (via AsiaPulse) that Apple’s iPad 2 introduction has forced Samsung to reconsider its plans for its forthcoming Galaxy Tab 10.1, a larger version of its initial 7-inch Galaxy Tab that is intended to offer a more similar form factor to the iPad. According to a Samsung executive, the company is looking to improve the specs of the device to be more competitive with the iPad 2.
Lee Don-joo, executive vice president of Samsung’s mobile division, said that Apple has presented new challenges for the South Korean company with a thinner mobile gadget that is priced the same as its predecessor.
“We will have to improve the parts that are inadequate,” Lee told Yonhap News Agency. “Apple made it very thin.”
But technical specs are not the only issue facing Samsung with the Galaxy Tab 10.1, as the company also must address pricing issues that currently will make it difficult for the device to compete against the iPad 2.
The 7-inch Galaxy Tab was priced at nearly US$900 without a two-year contract from mobile operators, while the price of the iPad 2 starts at $499, with the most expensive model costing $829. Samsung did not announce the pricing details for the 10.1-inch tablet.
“The 10-inch (tablet) was to be priced higher than the 7-inch (tablet) but we will have to think that over,” Lee added.
Apple made a number of references to the tablet competition during its iPad 2 introduction earlier this week, making a point to illustrate Apple’s hardware and software head start and pricing advantages over competitors’ offerings. Apple’s iPad 2 comes to market even as some competitors have yet to begin shipping their first round of tablet devices announced in some cases many months ago.

Samsung is used to waging relentless assaults on foreign markets. What it is less used to, analysts say, is fending off a bold offensive by a foreign competitor with a breakthrough product. While the Verizon iPhone 4 announcement this week captured all the headlines, the fact that the new CDMA-based hardware is now ready to go also opens the door for other major CDMA carriers around the world to carry the device. According to DigiTimes, the CDMA iPhone 4 is set to rapidly make its way to China, Japan, and South Korea, with other countries also likely to see the device.
The report also offers some information on the supply chain for the CDMA iPhone 4, which has reportedly been tooled up to produce 7 million units this quarter, although it is unclear how many of those will make their way into the hands of consumers by the end of the quarter and how many will be used to fill out channel inventory for sales going forward.
As had been previously noted, Pegatron has been brought onboard as a second iPhone 4 manufacturer, joining Apple’s long-standing partner Foxconn. Today’s report also offers some clarity to an earlier report that both Foxconn and Pegatron would be producing the CDMA iPhone 4. The new report indicates that Foxconn’s shipments of the CDMA iPhone 4 began in December and are headed to the United States, while Pegatron will begin shipping CDMA units for the rest of the world this month.
China Telecom, that country’s third-largest carrier, has already been rumored to be in discussions to carry the CDMA iPhone, and a pair of Indian CDMA carriers, Reliance and Tata, have also been claimed to be talking with Apple about bringing the iPhone to their networks.

While we noted yesterday that the iPad appeared set to launch in Scandinavia today, Apple’s new round of international launches for the popular tablet device has extended to a total of eleven countries scattered around the globe: Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, Malaysia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, South Korea, Sweden, and Taiwan.
Pricing and retail distribution partners vary from country to country, so customers should check with Apple and their favorite retailers regarding availability. Customers interested in 3G-capable iPad models should also check to see which carriers are supporting service in their country and determine data service pricing options.
