Mockup comparing possible next-generation iPod nano form factor to 2nd-generation model

AppleInsider offers new claims of a significant redesign of the iPod nano scheduled for release at next week’s media event, lending additional weight to the square cases and earlier rumors associated with the device.

People familiar with the matter indicated that the size and shape of the device, revealed this week through photos of third-party cases, will be more akin to the iPod shuffle than the current-generation iPod nano. Even with this small size, however, it is expected to have a traditional iPod dock connector, allowing compatibility with the existing iPod accessory ecosystem.

The new iPod nano is said to utilize a tiny 3cm-by-3cm display that was revealed in its bare form as unknown Apple-branded component earlier this summer. For comparison, the second-generation iPod nano had a screen that was about 3cm by 2.5cm.

In addition to the iPod nano, the report notes that Apple has been toying with plans to release a version of the iPod touch offering 3G cellular data access. The company is said to have begun seriously considering the idea after seeing the success of the 3G-capable version of the iPad released earlier this year, and prototypes of 3G-capable iPod touches are claimed to be in existence.

Finally, rumors of an update to Apple’s iLife suite persist, with today’s report suggesting that a portion of next week’s media event might be devoted to a new version of Apple’s multimedia suite. With Apple having moved to an approximately 18-month release cycle over the last few versions of iLife and the current version having been released in early 2009, an update in the near future would be a reasonable guess. One claim from late last month predicted an August 17th release for “iLife ’11″, which is rumored to see the discontinuation of iDVD, a significant revamp of iWeb, and a new “mystery” application. The claimed release did not, however, occur on the predicted date.

Mac Pro reservations at Fifth Avenue Apple Store

One MacRumors reader has pointed out to us that Apple’s somewhat-hidden Reserve and Pick Up program is currently showing the company’s Mac Pro models as “Unavailable” for reservation at his local retail store in Canada, possibly hinting at an imminent update. According to the tipster, the Mac Pro was seeing full availability for reservations at his store as recently as yesterday.

A quick check of the reservation systems for a handful of Apple retail stores around the United States shows a similar story, with some stores showing complete unavailability of Mac Pro reservations while others continue to offer either the base Quad-Core model or the 8-core model but not both.

Mac Pro reservations at SoHo Apple Store

Apple’s Mac Pro line is overdue for an update according to our Buyer’s Guide tracking. A report earlier this year had claimed that a Mac Pro refresh was due “by June”, but Apple failed to meet that rumored target. More recent claims of chip shortages for Intel’s latest 6-core chips suggested that Apple might not be able push out a Mac Pro update until later this summer.

As for other changes possible in a Mac Pro, evidence of support for several high-end graphics cards from ATI and NVIDIA have appeared in Mac OS X, and one report has pointed to the adoption of USB 3.0 and faster FireWire in the new machines. That report also suggested an “end of summer” timeframe for a release.

Not all of Apple’s sales channels are seeing constrained supplies of the Mac Pro, however, as the company’s online stores continue to show shipping estimates of “within 24 hours” for both stock models.

Just yesterday, a report indicated that Apple’s iMac stocks are also running low, with third-party distribution channels seeing constrained shipments ahead of a supposed update to that line as well.

Apple today sent out an email to registered developers reminding them to submit their Safari 5 extensions for consideration for inclusion in the company’s “Safari Extensions Gallery”.

We’ll soon be launching the Safari Extensions Gallery, a new destination that provides you with an opportunity to increase the visibility of your Safari extension beyond your website.

The Safari Extensions Gallery will feature selected extensions that offer an innovative user experience. And a one-click installation process will allow users to seamlessly install extensions from a developer’s website without ever having to leave the Gallery.

Have your extension considered for the Safari Extensions Gallery. Submit your extension download URL and supporting metadata today.

Apple released Safari 5 at its Worldwide Developers Conference just over a month ago. Among other enhancements, Safari 5 includes support for extensions, add-ons created by third-party developers to offer new functionalities within the browser. Several early extensions have already been released, but Apple is still preparing the official launch of the feature with its gallery of featured extensions in the near future.

In mid-June, the company officially invited developers to submit their Safari extensions, noting that the gallery would be coming “later this summer”. While still has not provided an official date for the launch, it does appear to be approaching in the relatively near future.

Interested developers can find out more in Apple’s Safari Dev Center.

July 10th grand opening of Shanghai Apple store

The Financial Times offers an interesting piece highlighting the views of Lenovo CEO Liu Chuanzhi on Steve Jobs and Apple’s efforts to penetrate the rapidly-growing Chinese market where Lenovo leads in PC sales with 30% of the market. In particular, Liu notes that Lenovo is lucky that Apple “doesn’t care about China” or else it could see itself being “in trouble”.

Speaking of Apple’s chief executive, Lenovo’s founder and chairman, told the Financial Times: “We are lucky that Steve Jobs has such a bad temper and doesn’t care about China. If Apple were to spend the same effort on the Chinese consumer as we do, we would be in trouble.”

Evidence is mounting, however, that Apple may be beginning to take the Chinese market more seriously, with the company announcing earlier this year that it plans to open up to 25 Apple retail stores in the country within the next two years. In fact, the company is planning a grand opening this weekend for its first store in Shanghai, the company’s second store in the country following the Beijing store opened in time for the 2008 Summer Olympics there.

As Silicon Alley Insider points out as well, Apple executives noted during the company’s most recent earnings conference call that revenue from “greater China” including Hong Kong and Taiwan totaled $1.3 billion for the first six months of fiscal year 2010, up over 200% year-over-year.
