When Exchange 2007 debuted, many organizations passed, leaving critical messaging services hosted on an Exchange 2003 platform and associated dated hardware. While 2003 is a stalwart, a series of features in the 2010 package greatly expand the accessibility of messaging services to users. Improvements to the internal design reduce the I/O load on the server, and resiliency of the entire suite has been improved to protect vital communications and reduce the risk, and associated cost, of data loss. if 2007 was implemented, the improvements to the Outlook Web Access component, as well as further gains on the I/O characteristics of the software should provide a compelling set of potential benefits for businesses to consider.

Businesses have lagged somewhat behind the adoption of various forms of personal communications over the last 5 years. While organizations provided voicemail, email, and (grudgingly) instant messaging (IM), employees have overwhelmingly adopted SMS text messaging as a primary form of communication. Improvements to the newly coined Outlook Web App allow users to capture all of these forms of conversation in one interface, universally accessible through any of four major web browsers (including Apple’s Safari). Communications can be grouped by conversation, which allows the user to coherently manage a lengthy exchange that might include email, text, and voicemail. In today’s business climate, being able to track written records of how decisions were made is paramount, and the remarkable ability to handle this (including SMS text) in a unified location is not to be overlooked.

With Outlook Web App, all user communications are securely available on any platform that is in use, be it laptop, smartphone, or tablet. Calendars are updated and/or shared on the fly, and the status indicator (in/out of office) finally achieves its full potential by allowing others to view and then determine the best mode of communication. Voicemail receives a facelift as well, where Exchange 2010 goes one step beyond unified messaging,(delivery of a recorded voicemail to the mailbox as a .wav attachment), by offering speech-to-text translation for written delivery to the inbox.

Behind the scenes, a complex new database replication design allows for the creation of Database Availability Groups (DAG). these are a series of up to 16 Exchange servers that use continuous replication to maintain multiple copies of the mail database. In the event of a failure, the Exchange service is maintained, with failover to the new database occurring in less than 30 seconds. In a distributed database environment, or better, with Exchange services in the cloud, the risk of data loss is greatly reduced through the use of DAG, and productivity is increased through better overall system uptime.

On the I/O performance side of things, Microsoft claims such a vast improvement over Exchange 2003/2007 that support is offered for storage options from SAN to external attached SATA based products. The ability to use cost effective large disks for backup, coupled with the user facing service, Personal Archiving, allows organizations and users to create enormous archive volumes in a centralized location, rather than creating (and subsequently loosing) multiple PST files on their local PC. Backups can be performed once, and on one location, and do not require a third party PST locator solution to guarantee the capture of all critical data.

The overall strength of Outlook Web App, coupled with the enhancements to the performance and resiliency of Microsoft Exchange 2010 position it as a robust successor to Exchange 2003/2007. In it, Microsoft has created a productivity suite that captures all aspects of modern business communications in one familiar software package.

Web hosting is one of the many ways you can make a little money by using the internet to your best advantage. Companies of such make their dollars by charging rent for a share of the internet space to online professionals and to those who’d like to run their own sites and informational blogs. Sounds hard? It’s actually not that hard if you stick to it and learn the ropes of the business. If you learn it well you’d be able to reap the benefits of all your hard work but before you get started you need to find the right web hosting company. HostGator is a great one which lets you get an effective kick start.

With HostGator, you don’t have to have an immediate plan, you can register for server space first and then you can decide how you want to use it and how you’d like to give out the said space to other websites and online professionals. In most cases, a good reseller would put a price on the space based on the transfer rates and storage space available, it’s the fair and right way to do things without overcharging and cheating. you should take note of the types of websites that you deal with and make sure that you’ve got the bandwidth and set it at a correct price. The amount you charge is very important because if you rip off one site, news will travel and you’d be out of business in no time.

What’s more, HostGator provides you with everything that you need to resell the space you have with ease. There’s the user friendly cPanel which helps you track and manage your clients and also keeps track of your earnings as well. However, before you get too excited and put all you’ve got into the business, you must first have a plan. with the amount of space you’ve got, you have to decide how you’re going to divide it or if you’re going to be renting out the entire server. will your plan let you keep your website as part of the server that you will sell? there are a lot of things that you’d need to take into consideration, so draw up a plan and only then can you get started properly. HostGator’s biggest advantage is that they give you access to an unlimited amount of storage and transfer late which can help you manage and host your resellers account. It’s a great advantage that will help boost your earnings as well.

With so many ways to make a living with the internet, this would be the most effective as you get to manage your own business and sit at home all day while someone else picks up on the bill. It’s one of the most genius ways to generate income; all you’ve got to do is have the will to learn the ropes. you don’t need a degree to do this but you do need a whole lot of patience. Riches made from over the internet doesn’t happen overnight.

The problem is that Apple is actually right on this one when they were asked previously: It isn’t enough. The issue of enforcement is one that Fraken is currently hand-waving away and ignoring. Enforcement won’t catch all the situations where a developer may lie about the data transfer. How do I validate what an app sends back to the mothership through an encrypted channel, for example?

What Apple has been doing instead is allowing the user to mis-trust the developer and lock them out of the location information if the app asks for it. That is easy to enforce and puts the power in the hands of the user. Unfortunately, it doesn’t help situations where an app with legitimate reasons to access the information also uses it for more nefarious purposes, but depending on how nefarious, a privacy policy requirement isn’t going to stop it.

Would you rather have Apple and Google address this situation, or the government?

All it’s going to take is one major security scandal to have consumers demanding more protections in the digital world. At that point the government will fell compelled to step in.

I think it would be a good idea if Apple and Google took care of this problem themselves.

Apple, already, largely fulfills this function but there are ways around it. If everything has to go through an Apple cloud, it seems like Apple could have a pretty good handle on information flow.

In a slightly ironic twist, the fact that OS X doesn’t have any viruses in the wild for it (and Apple have gained mileage from that fact) will actually make OS X less secure for some users than Windows.

The simple fact is that the biggest security weakness in any modern OS is the organic bit sat in front of the keyboard: Users do stupid things!

On windows, people are well aware of the perceived risks and most average users run AV software (it’s difficult to buy a PC nowadays that doesn’t come with it bundled and on Vista and Windows 7 you get nagged to death if you don’t have it installed). This might not catch zero day exploits but the AV vendors catch up pretty quick and any malware is caught and removed early if the user is stupid enough to click through a security warning on a dodgy software install.

However, on OS X, the average user is sat there thinking: Everyone knows Mac’s can’t get viruses so I’m perfectly safe doing anything I want on the internet (they don’t care about the differences between malware, viruses, trojans, worms, etc: to them, anything that does bad things to their computer is a virus).

Now when they get the “enter an administrator username and password” prompt, they probably don’t even pause for thought as they are perfectly happy with their false sense of security

The harsh reality is that no computer is immune from malware that’s willingly installed by the user and good security practice is as important on OS X as Windows: Don’t have “run safe files after download” set in safari, and never, ever, give a program your admin credentials unless you know exactly where it came from.

Last month, French researchers Jeremie Francone and Laurence Nigay posted a video showing off a method for using head tracking by a device’s camera to simulate three-dimensional scenes for the iPad, a concept in which Apple has expressed some interest.

As noted by MacStories, a new demo app from Francone and Nigay known as i3D has appeared in the App Store, giving users the opportunity to test out the technology on their own devices.

i3D is a free universal app running on the iPad 2, iPhone 4, and fourth-generation iPod touch. It contains a sample video image displaying a bounding box as it tracks the user’s head location, as well as five demos showing the simulated 3D perspective that can be generated using the tracking.

Apple seems to be getting ready to launch their cloud-based digital music “locker” service that has been rumored for many months. But contrary to an earlier Reuters report, All Things D has heard that Apple has already come to terms with two of the four major record labels about the service, and that Apple’s Eddy Cue will be in New York tomorrow to try to finalize the remaining deals.

The negotiating of these deals is in contrast to Amazon’s music storage service which notably launched last month without any deals in place — a fact that the record labels were not very happy about. Apple is said to have been “very aggressive and thoughtful about it” and “It feels like they want to go pretty soon”, according to an unnamed music executive. All Things D also provides some details about how the service might work from Apple:

The industry executives I’ve talked to haven’t seen Apple’s service themselves, but say they’re aware of the broad strokes. The idea is that Apple will let users store songs they’ve purchased from its iTunes store, as well as others songs stored on their hard drives, and listen to them on multiple devices.

All Things D points out that having official licenses can allow Apple to store a single master copy of a song rather than storing individual copies for every user. Amazon’s original argument against needing the licenses was that their service was the same as any upload storage service. This meant that users needed to upload copies of their old music to be able to stream them. With the proper deals, Apple could avoid the need to upload individual copies and simply allow users to stream off of the single master copy. This could save on significant upload time for the user and storage requirements for Apple.
